A recent survey conducted by Gallup and released on February 27, 2026, reveals a historic shift in American public perception of the conflict between Israel and Palestine: 41% of adults surveyed express greater sympathy toward the Palestinians, compared to 36% who lean more toward the Israelis (Gallup, 2026; JNS.org, 2026; The National, 2026). For the first time since Gallup began tracking this question in 2001, the traditional advantage in favor of Israel has disappeared and even reversed, although the difference falls within the poll’s statistical margin of error.
The results highlight that this shift is driven primarily by a notable decline in support for Israel among independent voters, along with growing support for the Palestinians among young adults and Democrats. Republicans, for their part, largely continue to show a clear preference for Israel.
A particularly striking change is observed in the youngest age segment, including among younger Republicans. In the 18 to 34 age group, 53% express greater sympathy for the Palestinians, while only 23% do so for the Israelis, underscoring a marked generational shift.
This decline in support among younger Republicans indicates that the phenomenon transcends traditional partisan divisions and points to a deeper, generational evolution in how Americans perceive the conflict in the Middle East.
Additionally, the survey shows strong support within the country for the two-state solution, with 57% of respondents favoring the establishment of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state.
